Mathwright Activities on Webpages

Mathwright is an authoring platform for creating interactive computer environments where students can explore mathematical and scientific ideas. These interactive environments may be viewed either on-line in a webbrowser, or using the MW32 reader program with no required internet access. Please note that mathwright activitities are only available for the Microsoft Windows ™ (95/98/Me/NT/2000) platforms. To find out more about the mathwright community and the resources it provides, please visit the Mathwright Library.

As a webpage ....
On-line, you can view mathwright activities only in an ActiveX enabled browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later, and you must be using one of the Windows 32-bit operating systems (anything later than Windows 3.1). Also, your Java Virtual Machine should be fairly recent. On-line viewing also requires the Personal MathwrightWeb ActiveX Control, which may be downloaded for free below. Once that is downloaded and installed, you simply visit mathwright activity webpages as you would visit any other webpage. The mathwright activity then appears to operate within your webpage like a JAVA applet.

As a local application ....
You can also download each activity to a directory of your choice, and then play it using a program called the MW32 Reader. The advantage of this approach is that once the software and activity are installed, you can use them without a live internet connection, and the performance is a bit faster. The MW32 Reader software is also available as a free download below.

After you download and install the Reader, you download mathwright activities for local use by using the download link in the list of activities. What you are really downloading is a self-extracting archive, which is an executable file. You will need to keep track of where it is stored on your machine when it is downloaded. Then, using the Windows file browsing tools (such as Windows Explorer, or My Computer), move the downloaded file to the location where you wish the mathwright activities to be saved, and open it. That will cause a new folder to be created in the same location as the downloaded file. The activity may be launched by opening the Reader document inside the folder (which also contains other files the activity needs). This reader document can be recognized in three ways:

  1. It has the same name as the folder it sits in
  2. The file name ends in .lva (although your machine may be configured to hide this part of the file name)
  3. It has the following icon:

The activity can also be opened from within the Reader program. For this approach, open the Reader Program from the Start/Programs menu (it is called Java Mathwright32). Next, use the Workbook menu, and select Open, as illustrated below:

Then find the folder for your desired activity, and the Reader document within it, just as you would open a document with any other application.

After you are satisfied that the activity is operating correctly, the original download file can be deleted from your machine.
